Castle and palm trees on an ankle

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of a black castle silhouette sits inside a thin curved arc on the outer side of the ankle. Two palm trees above the castle are shaded with soft pink and teal wash rather than solid ink. The photo is taken straight on against a white paper surface, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The boats had been out four days when Edie Marr started painting palm trees on the harbour wall. Nobody in Porthennis had ever seen a palm tree grow, and the fishermen said so, leaning on the rail with their hands in their pockets while she worked. Edie ignored them. She had signwritten half the shopfronts on the front, and she knew the difference between a line that would hold and one that would run in the rain.

Every evening she had painted the same thing on the stones beside the slipway: a black castle sitting on the curve of a low hill, its towers thin as pencil marks. Her brother Tom had drawn it for her on the back of a ferry ticket the summer he left for the trawlers, telling her there was a castle on an island where the sun set between two palms and nobody worked before noon. She had kept the ticket in her apron pocket for nineteen years. It had gone soft as cloth.

On the fourth night the wind backed round to the north and the lamp on the point went out. The women came down to the wall with torches and stood in a row, watching the dark water, and Edie kept painting. She mixed a pink from the cochineal in the chandler's cupboard and a teal from the blue they used on the lifeboat, and she dabbed them into the sky above the castle the way Tom had described the sunset, soft and bleeding at the edges.

At first light the Mary Jane came round the point on one engine with no lamp showing. Tom climbed the slipway, looked up at the wall, and frowned. 'You've put the palms on the wrong side,' he said. Edie wiped her hands on her apron. 'I painted them the way you told me,' she said, and he laughed so hard he had to sit down on the step, and the tide came in around his boots.
