Desert scene with saguaro cacti on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A circular desert landscape shows two tall saguaro cacti, a smaller cactus, a mountain range and a pale sun or moon. The sky and ground are shaded with fine stippled dots and hatched lines, with the cacti outlined in clean linework. The design is rendered in black and grey ink and is tightly framed within the circle.

The lift at Calder House had been broken since March, so Ray Eastwood climbed the nineteen floors with his granddaughter's wellies knocking against the shopping bag, and by the landing he had stopped pretending he minded. Nell was ahead of him, counting the concrete steps out loud in a language she had invented that afternoon.

Irene had wanted the desert more than the sea. In 1987 they hired a white Ford in Phoenix and drove north with the windows down, past a sign warning of nothing in particular, until the saguaros began standing along the ridges like men waiting to be picked for a team. Irene had counted them. She got to four hundred and eleven before the sun swung round onto the dashboard, and she gave up, laughing, with her palm flat against the glass.
Nell had found the print at the bottom of the wardrobe, the one he had cut from a tourist's calendar and never framed. She wanted to know why the moon was a blank circle. Ray started to explain about light and paper, then stopped, because he did not know why Irene had left it white. He had always assumed it was a printing fault.
Nell took the biro from the kitchen drawer and filled in the ground with small, determined dots, as if she were feeding the cacti sand, while he unpacked the tins. When she had finished she stuck the picture to the fridge with a magnet shaped like a lemon. 'Now it's ours,' she said, and pressed her thumb into the middle of the pale sun, leaving a smudge exactly where the light was.
