Mountain range outline on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A continuous black outline of jagged mountain peaks runs across the forearm, wrapping around the limb from the wrist side toward the elbow. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, so the skyline reads as a single unbroken line. The ink is black on a light skin tone, and the dark background makes the outline stand out.

Dear Tom, the snow came over the top of Carn Dhu on Tuesday, all at once, the way you always said it would, and by dinner the whole ridge had gone the colour of wet slate against a sky like pewter. I stood at the yard gate with the feed bucket and counted the peaks the way Dad taught us, left to right: the tall one, the notched one, the two that look like a pair of ewes lying down. There are seven if you squint and nine if you're honest.

The lambing shed is full of straw now and the Hendersons' bull got through the fence again, so I have been out since five with a torch in my teeth. Mum's hip is worse. She says it's the damp, but I know it's the stairs. I have posted the Ellis cheque and still haven't found the nerve to tell the vet that the grey ewe with the torn ear is probably not going to see March.

Last night the cloud lifted for about a quarter of an hour after dark, and the line of the hills was drawn so sharp against the last light that I could have traced it with a pencil. I thought of you doing exactly that on the back of an envelope in that flat in Leeds, saying it looked like a heart monitor. You were right. It does.

Come up at Easter if the road holds. Bring the drawing you did at school, the one with all the peaks joined into a single unbroken line, and I'll hang it in the porch where the mountains can see it from the kitchen. Love, Jo. P.S. The grey ewe lived. I'm writing that down so it happens.
