Castle in an ornate frame on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
An ornate gilded frame sits on the outer thigh, topped with a triangle, circle and line symbol and set with green gem accents. Inside, a castle with tall spires stands on a dark rock beneath a swirling green sky with a skull-shaped cloud, and the night sky shades to blue at the edges. The painterly shading is detailed and the colour is rich, with the frame filling most of the photo.

The frame came into Mrs Oddie's shop wrapped in a dust sheet, and nobody in Gallowmere would say who had sent it. Tomas unwrapped it on the bench under the lamp and found a castle painted inside the gilt, a grey keep on a black crag beneath a sky the colour of bottle glass. Something green moved in that sky. He told himself it was the lamp.

The skull came out at dusk the first night he hung it in the window. It was only a cloud at first, a bruise of smoke above the spires, but by the third evening its eye sockets had deepened and its jaw hung open over the battlements. The baker across the lane stopped sweeping his step after dark. Mrs Oddie had scratched a small sign into the back of the frame, a triangle, a circle and a single straight line, and she told Tomas it was a warning, not a signature.
He tried to repaint the sky. Each morning the brush came away greener, and the castle's windows had lit themselves in the night, one more every dawn, until he counted seven and then eight. On the eighth morning he worked loose the green stone set at the base, cold as the bottom of a well, and pressed it into his palm to see whether it would stick. It did not stick. It rang once, like struck glass, and the sky went still.
He sold the frame at market for four shillings to a girl who had walked past it three times. She hung it above her bed and never once looked at the window behind it, where the smoke was already gathering again, patient, over a different town.
