Black cat with roses on a leg

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A black cat with bright yellow-green eyes and a small golden bell dominates the design, its face turned towards the viewer. Yellow roses and green leaves surround it, set against a red and white patterned background. Bold black outlines and smooth grey shading give the cat form, while the flowers and foliage are filled with flat, saturated colour.

Dear Ruth,

Ferris has discovered the lift again, which means the whole of block C now knows when he has decided to go somewhere. You will remember the little brass bell on his collar, the one that rang every time he wriggled out from under your bed. Since the new caretaker arrived, it has been sounding up and down the stairwell at six each morning, like a tram nobody else can see.

I still haven't moved the red cloth off the windowsill. It's the one from the market on Saturdays, with the white flower diamonds, and he sleeps on it in the afternoons with his paws tucked into the pot of yellow roses you left me. The leaves have got greener since you went. Mrs Adeyemi says it's him, that a cat that black brings the plants on, though I think it's just the sun coming over the car park.

The night the removal men took your sofa, he went missing. I searched the bins, the bike shed and the roof hatch with a torch and a tin of tuna. At half eleven I found him sitting on your doormat, on the other side of the wall where your key used to hang. He was quite calm about it. The bell was silent because he had stopped moving, and I understood then that he had been waiting for someone to come back through that door.

I've screwed a new hook into the hallway and hung the bell there, so it rings whenever anyone opens the front door. It is not much of a replacement. Come and see him at Christmas and bring that awful tea you like. Love, Maureen
