Calico cat and flowers on a limb

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A calico cat face with orange, black and white patches, yellow-orange eyes and a pink nose fills the upper part of the design, with a bold black outline. Below it, a purple flower with yellow centre, pink tulips and green leaves sit against soft shading on the cat's white chest. The colours are rich and saturated, and the design is framed closely by the limb's curve.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat was already on the wall when you came up the switchbacks, sitting in the notch of the old waystone as if the abbey had posted her there. Calico, the colour of autumn larch and wet slate, with one white paw and a patch of black that ran over one eye like a bad night's sleep. The muleteer Oswin swore she belonged to the pass, that she walked ahead of storms and sat down wherever the snow would stop. You laughed at him. You had a ledger of debts in Lucerne and a daughter waiting in a valley you could not see from here, and a cat was not going to slow you down.

Snow came in the afternoon, thick and sideways, and the path vanished under it. The mules balked. Oswin lost his footing near the scree and you spent an hour on your knees digging the cart free while the light went grey. When you looked up, the cat was standing on a boulder at the edge of the drop, tail high, looking back over her shoulder with eyes the colour of marigolds. She did not wait for you to thank her. She simply turned and went, and where she had walked the snow had cleared to a narrow line of gravel.

You followed it. At the bottom of the pass, where the track widened into a meadow, the cleared path ended in a clump of purple wild pansies, pink tulips pushing up through the last frost, and a broad green leaf standing like a signpost. You stood among them until your hands stopped shaking. Then you took the ledger from your coat, tore out the page of debts, and pressed it under a stone at the foot of the waystone, where the flowers were already opening.
