Cat with goldfish bowl and rose
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A grey cat with several orange eyes and a jewelled pendant on its brow sits above a round bowl holding an orange goldfish. A large pink rose with green leaves fills the lower part of the design. Bold outlines, solid fills and crescent moon shapes give the piece a neo-traditional look, with colour dominating the design against pale skin.

The cat had four eyes and none of them had ever slept, which Mrs Okonedo said was why the bargemen never stole from the Lark. Every evening she set her bowl on the cabin sill where the lamplight caught the glass, and every evening the goldfish inside turned slowly, as if it were reading the river. Tomas, who had come aboard in March with a split lip and no coat, thought it was a pet until the night the fog came up from the locks and the bowl went cold in his hands.

He had been sent to fetch the bowl from the sill because the cat would not come down. It sat on the roof above the hatch, grey as wet slate, a jewelled stone glinting on its brow like a second moon. Its tail was curled around a pink rose someone had left on the chimney, and it watched him with all four amber eyes at once. The goldfish knocked against the glass. Tomas understood, without anyone telling him, that the cat was not guarding the fish from the river. It was guarding the river from the fish.
He carried the bowl back down the companionway and set it on the table. Mrs Okonedo poured the tea and did not look up. "You have her answer now," she said. "Give the fish a name before the tide turns, or she will take the next one who asks her a question." Tomas looked at the small orange shape turning in its clear round world and said the first name that came to him, which was his brother's. The cat, outside, began to purr loud enough to rattle the window, and far down the cut, the lock gates swung open on their own.
