Cat and peonies across the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A cat's face sits at the centre of the design, with a pendant and beaded chain at its forehead, flanked by two large outlined peony flowers on each side. Dangling beaded chains with small drops hang beneath the flowers. The linework is fine and precise, with dotwork and stippled shading on the cat's fur and the petals, and the design is centred symmetrically across the upper chest.

The dust came under the door before the first lorry did, so Ines swept it back out with the palm-fibre broom her mother had left behind, and it came in again. By noon the stall was grey with it. Only the cat stayed clean. Pasha sat on the counter among the strings of glass beads, her white coat puffed to twice its size, the little silver pendant at her brow catching whatever light the shutters allowed.

The man who gave her the pendant drove the road for years, selling maps to people who no longer needed them. He came every April, when the nights were still cold enough to frost the windscreen, and bought one bottle of water and a length of fine chain. Ines never learnt his name. The first spring he left a bead for the cat. The second, he hooked the pendant onto a chain and fixed it at her forehead himself, and Pasha allowed it, because she allowed very little.
In the third April there was no dusty saloon at the pumps. Instead a courier brought a cool box that smelt of the coast, and inside, wrapped in damp newspaper, were peonies, heavy and pale, already softening at the edges. A card said only: keep the chains for the drops, he'd like them to hang properly.
Ine hung them from the shutter hooks that evening, long strands of beads with small weighted drops at the ends. When the wind came up off the flats, the drops knocked against the glass like someone asking to be let in, and Pasha lifted her head toward the road and did not once look back at the counter.
