Feline head with geometric sunburst on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A stippled feline head in profile sits on the upper arm, framed by radiating spikes and a circle of nested triangles. The cat's features are built from dense dots and fine shading, while the surrounding pattern uses crisp black linework. The photograph is monochrome and shows the tattoo against a plain black top, with the rest of the subject cropped out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Marigold Rose had been four days out before anyone thought to count the cat. Skipper Haddow swore she had come aboard in Skerrow with the ice, a grey thing with a torn ear who ignored every one of us and sat on the wheelhouse step as if she owned the boat and was merely letting us work it.

On the fifth morning the fog lifted off the Dogger like a sheet off furniture, and the sun came up behind us, shoving its rays out across the water in long hard spokes. Every deckhand stopped hauling. The cat had climbed onto the bow rail, her profile black against the glare, and she watched the light split into points the way she might watch a mouse decide which way to run.

Haddow reckoned the net would come up full, and it did, but not with fish. Caught in the mesh was a lattice of brass-coloured sea glass, each piece cut to a triangle and nested inside the next like the rings of a felled tree. Nobody could say where it came from, and nobody wanted to be the one who tipped it back over the side.

We ran for home with the hold full and the cat riding the bow. When we came into Skerrow she jumped down onto the quay and walked straight up the slipway without looking back, salt crusting her coat so it caught the light like a field of stars. I still keep one of those triangles in my coat pocket. Some mornings I hold it up to the sun and count the spikes, and the cat is always there at the edge of the count, facing east.
