Cat face on a finger

Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A small realistic cat face, shown from the front, fills the side of one finger on a hand resting on a striped cloth. The fur is built up with soft grey shading and dark tabby stripes, with a white muzzle and pale whiskers. The eyes are the only colour, a bright green that stands out against the grey.

The tabby came over the wall the week the greenhouse glass went cloudy with frost, and she sat on my potting bench as if someone had ordered it for her. Nobody on Orchard Lane claimed her. Mrs Halloran at number nine said she belonged to the mill cottages, and the postman swore she had a second home with a fishmonger, but I only ever saw her in my garden, usually between the leeks and the cold frame, watching me with eyes the green of a bottle held up to the light.

I called her Sexton, because she kept the place the way a churchyard warden keeps the graves, walking the rows at dusk and reporting to no one. Within a month the mice had gone from the seed trays and the slugs had given up on the lettuces. I started leaving a saucer of milk by the water butt, and she started leaving a dead wren on the back step, which I took to be a fair exchange.

In February the hard frost split the outside tap, and I spent a grey morning on my knees in the potting shed, swearing at the stopcock, when I felt a weight settle across my shoulders. She had climbed up me as if I were a fence post. I kept very still. From there she could see the whole plot: the hedge, the bare plum, the lane beyond, and the fox that crossed the bottom bed twice before noon.

She did not come back after the thaw. I searched under the rhubarb and along the wall and asked at every door on the lane. Then in April a grey tabby kitten appeared at the cold frame, thin and suspicious, with the same green stare fixed on my face. I went inside for the saucer, filled it with milk, and set it down by the water butt without a word.
