Fine line tattoo of a cat face with teal eyes and a pink nose on the forearm, with light grey shading.

Cat face on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cat's head in profile-free front view, drawn with thin black outlines and dotted fur detail across the cheeks and brow. The eyes are filled with teal and green, the nose is pink, and soft grey shading sits around the ears and jaw. The design is centred on the forearm against a plain skin background with a patterned pink fabric at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had carried the kitten up the Cwm Pass inside her coat for three hours before she admitted she had no idea where the path went. The snow had filled the cairns, and the carter who had hired her to bring his mules over had died in the valley with a cough and a pocketful of unpaid wages.

The kitten did not seem worried. It had been found in the stable at Llan Dafydd, a grey thing with a white blaze and a torn ear, and it had chosen her coat the way cats choose a warm lap. Now it pushed its head out between the buttons and stared past her shoulder with eyes the colour of sea glass, turning left, then right, as though reading a map nobody else could see.

"Left, then," Marta said, and went left, because a cat with eyes like that could not be argued with. They crossed a ridge where the wind kept trying to take her hat, then a frozen tarn that groaned under her boots. Near dusk the kitten stiffened and pressed hard against her collarbone. Below them, through a gap in the cloud, a farmhouse window showed one yellow light, four miles off and a thousand feet down.

She reached the door at midnight with numb fingers and the kitten asleep beneath her chin. The carter's widow opened it, took one look at the animal, and said her husband had always sworn the cat could find the road over in a blizzard. Marta set it down by the stove, where it washed one paw as if it had only stepped out for the milk.
