Tabby cat face on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A tabby cat's face is tattooed on the inner forearm, looking up and slightly to one side with its ears raised. The fur is rendered with dark grey and black linework and shading, with fine whisker lines extending across the skin. The eyes are filled with amber and the nose is a warm reddish tone, set against green grass in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pardoe never let the cat in the front parlour, but Pudding went where he liked, and by the second week of October he had claimed the top stair as his own. I was lodging at Fernleigh House on Gull Row that autumn, a clerk with a cough and a trunk of unanswered letters, and I took the cat's habit of watching the sea as a kind of instruction. He sat in the dormer window with his ears pricked and his eyes gone amber in the low light, tracking the grey boats round the headland as if he were counting them home.

On the night the Brightwater failed to show, the landlady came up the stairs with a lamp and found me already there. Neither of us spoke. Pudding stood, stretched, and looked past my shoulder towards the harbour, one ear turned as though he had heard a voice calling a name only he knew. Mrs Pardoe said the boat's skipper was her cousin's boy and that the tide had been wrong all week. I said nothing. The cat's gaze did not waver for an hour.

At first light the lamp on the breakwater flickered twice, and then the Brightwater came round the point with her sail torn and one man at the tiller, waving a red cap. Mrs Pardoe went down to the quay in her slippers. The cat stayed where he was, paws tucked under him, watching the water with the patience of something that had never once doubted the sea would give things back.
