Small elephant head on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant head faces forward, drawn with delicate outlines and soft grey shading on the ears, trunk and forehead. The tattoo sits along the side of a finger and is the only inked element in the frame. Black ink and grey tones are used throughout, with the background of a dark blue leather-look surface and a red painted nail.

The lock-keeper at Hatherleigh swore the Mabel Ann was carrying something heavier than coal, so when the barge tied up under the willows that night, Tom Gaddy took a lantern down into the hold to see for himself. Beneath the sacks he found a head the size of a loaf, grey as river silt, with ears folded back like old sails and two small tusks no longer than matchsticks.

His father had told him the tale of the elephant that swam the Severn. A travelling showman lost his beast in a flood, and the animal, unable to find its keeper, went along the banks from Gloucester toward the sea, taking a little of each village with it: a bell from one church, a pear from one orchard, a bucket from one lock. Where it stopped to drink, the water ran sweeter. Nobody had ever seen the body, only the head, which the river kept carrying back to the shallows.
Tom did not believe it, but he did not put it back either. He carried it up to the deck in the rain and set it on the tiller box, where it looked out over the water with its patient eyes. In the morning the lock-keeper came down the towpath, saw the thing, and went quiet in a way that told Tom the old man had heard the story too.
They rowed it out at first light to the shallows below the weir, where the water ran brown and fast over the stones. The lock-keeper watched from the bank and said nothing, which Tom took for permission. When he looked back the head was gone, and the reeds at the edge were bent in a line leading toward the sea.
