Cat face on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small cat face is drawn in thin black linework on pale skin, with two triangular ears, two almond-shaped eyes, a small nose and three whiskers on each side. The lines are simple and sketchy with no shading, and the design sits in the centre of the frame against a soft, slightly blurred outdoor background. The image is in black ink only.

By the second week of the autumn tour, the only thing left in the Hollis and Dunne Travelling Show that still worked properly was my hand. The printer in Lewes had stopped taking our orders in August, so I painted the bills myself on the back of old feed sacks, and when I ran short of room for the star attraction I drew her face instead. Tansy, Madame Oriel's last performing cat, had a grey and white muzzle and a habit of looking at the ringmaster as if she were pricing him.

Three quick strokes for the whiskers each side, two ears like folded paper, and eyes I could draw with my eyes shut. Madame Oriel said the sketches made the cat look clever, which was the lie that kept the show alive. Tansy had not jumped through a hoop since the spring. She lay in a hamper under the wardrobe tent and ate tinned pilchards that Madame Oriel paid for by selling her rings one at a time.
On the last night at Ashcombe, the tent held eleven people and a dog. The band had already gone home. Madame Oriel stood in the shadow of the centre pole and called the cat's name, and Tansy stepped out of the hamper, crossed the sawdust, and sat square in the spotlight as if she had been waiting all season for an audience worth the trouble. Nobody clapped. The dog barked once, politely.
I took the spare biro from my apron and drew her on the back of a programme while she washed one paw, then left it on the ring fence for whoever cleared up. Her ears went up. Her whiskers went out. It was the only bill anyone kept that season, and I have since heard that the Ashcombe dustman pinned it above his kettle, which is the closest this show ever came to fame.
