Crescent moon and palm on inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand shows a small black ink design on the inner wrist, made up of a crescent or swirl shape with a palm tree-like flourish on the left. Several small cross or tally-like marks are scattered to the right and above it. The linework is bold and slightly uneven, with solid black ink and no grey shading, against a sunlit garden background.

Nell had stopped trusting the sea by the ninth day, but she still watched it the way you watch a dog that has bitten once. The raft had split along its seams in the night, and what was left of the water cask rolled in the shallows like a drunk who would not go home. She dragged it up beside the palm, the only tree on the island that leaned, and sat with her knees against her chest until the sun found her.

She had counted the days with a knife on the lee side of the trunk. Crosses, each one a day, each one cut hard so the bark would remember. Seven of them made a week, and a week was the only unit that felt like anything out here. The moon was a thin paring over the reef most nights, curved like the blade she used for the coconuts, and she had begun to think of it as the only other thing awake.

On the forty-first night the moon came up fat and sideways, and she heard the first gull she had heard in a fortnight. Something cracked in the lagoon, a hull or a hull's ghost, and then a lantern swung out past the headland. She did not shout. She stood up, took the knife, and cut one more cross, deeper than the rest, and then, because the moon seemed to want it, a small hooked swirl beside it that looked nothing like a moon at all.
