Mrs Hollis had been dead nine days when the cat started coming to the forge. She had never kept a cat herself, which made it odd that the grey tabby knew the way up the lane from the woodland edge, through the gap in the hazel hedge, and straight onto the workbench as if it were paying rent. Tom Pryce, who had taken over the silversmith's shed at the edge of Ashgrove because nobody else wanted the damp, shooed it off twice before he noticed it had been sitting on a half-finished ring.

The ring was a band of worked silver wound with thin swirls like wind through long grass, and the cat had pressed its paws into one curl so neatly that the pattern seemed to have been drawn around it. Tom had meant to sell the ring to a woman in the village who wanted something for her daughter's wedding. Instead he sat on the stool and watched the cat wash one ear with great seriousness while the afternoon light slid across the bench.

He never did find out whose cat it was. He made the ring again in the end, with a small seahorse curled at the join, and the cat watched him solder it without interest. On the morning he finished, it stepped down from the bench, nudged the door open with its nose, and trotted back into the trees with its tail up, as if the commission had been its own idea all along.
