Small cat face tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown palm down with a small cat face tattooed on the middle finger, drawn in thin black lines with two dot eyes, a triangular nose, a smile and three whiskers on each side. Silver rings with horse and dragon-style designs sit on the index and ring fingers. The background is a pale grey paved surface in soft daylight, and the ink is the only colour on the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat came aboard at Wexley Lock with river water running off its tail, and Mared Pell, who had never wanted a cat, put down the heel of a loaf because the rain was coming sideways and the cabin door would not shut. By morning it had claimed the coil of rope on the bow, and by the next lock it had worked out the sluice paddles better than the lock-keeper's boy.

It rode the cabin roof through the cuttings, flattening its ears under the low bridges. When the boat grounded on the mud below Hatherley, it sat on the tiller and stared at the water until the towrope came free. Mared began to count the locks by its moods: lazy at the top gates, sulking in the tunnel, delighted when the swans came close enough to be insulted.

The winter the ice came early, the slate sat in the hold and the boat froze fast against the bank at Cold Ash. Mared walked two miles for coal and came back to find the cat had spent the whole night on the hatch, watching the frozen cut like a sentry watching a road. She never told the company men about that. Instead she scratched a small face into the doorframe with the point of a nail: two dots, a nose, a grin, three whiskers a side. Every spring after, she added one line for each year they had kept the boat afloat together, and the cat, when the thaw came, slept beside the marks and never once looked at them.
