Cat head with sugar skull detail on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a cat head sits on the outer forearm, with bold solid black fills, large eyes and fine ornamental patterns across the face. Roses and smaller decorative shapes fill the lower section beside the head. The black and white photograph is taken at an angle, with the wrist and a bracelet visible above the tattoo and a denim and light fabric lap below.

The basket is on platform four when you come off the late shift, wedged between the vending machine and a bench, its lid nudged open an inch. Nobody has claimed it since the 22:14 from Leeds. Inside, curled on a folded tartan blanket, is a black cat with fine white lines painted across its face, the kind of ornament you once saw on paper skulls at a market stall in Bradford, and one eye is ringed with small petals. You crouch and it does not move. It only watches you with the patient stare of a stationmaster who has seen every train twice.

You take it to the lost property office, because that is the rule, and because the rule is easier than deciding otherwise. Priya on the morning desk writes CAT, BLACK, ONE in the ledger and says the council will collect on Friday. Friday comes and goes. The cat takes the windowsill above the kettle, eats the biscuits meant for drivers, and every evening walks to the end of the platform to sit beside the iron pillar where someone's rose bush has been left to climb through the railings.

On the third Tuesday a woman in a green coat stops at the office door, looking for a cat she lost on the Harrogate line. She sees the animal on the sill and goes very still. She tells you its name is Moth, that she and her brother painted those lines on him one wet August with a kitchen sponge and a tin of ink, and that the petals were her idea. Her voice wobbles on the last word. You open the basket and the cat steps out, unhurried, and at the platform edge he looks back once at you before the train pulls in and takes them both.
