Shaded rose with compass arrows on thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large shaded rose with layered petals and sharp leaves sits at the centre of the image, with thin compass-style arrows and small letter markings radiating from it. The rose is rendered in black and grey with soft gradients and bold outlines, and the surrounding linework is fine and crisp. The tattoo fills the upper half of a thigh photographed at a low angle, with a smaller arrow tattoo visible on the other leg.

The lift at Coldharbour Point stopped between the eleventh and twelfth floors on a Tuesday, and I was the one who had to sit in the dark with Mrs Okafor's shopping and tell her the cables were fine. I had the plant room key on my belt and a torch in my teeth, and I could hear her counting the floors through the grille as if it were a hymn.

Irene would have liked her. Irene was the one who drew the compass on the landing wall outside flat 14C, back when the council still bothered to paint things. She put a big rose in the middle, arrows pointing north, south, east and west, and she lettered the points herself because she said a map needed proper handwriting. The children used it to meet each other. "Meet at the rose," they'd say, and everyone knew which landing that meant, even the ones who couldn't yet tell north from a bus timetable.
When the lift finally shuddered and lurched up to the twelfth, Mrs Okafor pressed my hand through the gap in the doors and thanked me in a voice that had been very steady until then. I told her to mind the step. Then I climbed the last flight of the stairwell, past the rose, which had faded to a grey ghost under the strip light, and I traced the longest arrow with my thumb the way Irene used to, pointing us home.
