Sugar skull tattoos on the thighs

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

Two sugar skull tattoos sit on the upper thighs of a woman wearing denim shorts. The upper design has a teal skull framed by pink flowers and green leaves, while the lower one is a green skull with pink roses and scrollwork across the cheek and brow. The bold outlines and solid, saturated colour are shown in a casual indoor photo with a child's hands and legs in the lower frame.

Mrs Veronica Hale had been told the paint would never survive the damp, but she kept the tin of teal anyway, because the skull on the back bedroom wall was her late husband's last commission and she was not about to let the sea air have it. Every October she climbed the stepladder with a jam jar of water and a brush no thicker than an eyelash to touch up the roses.

This year the lodgers were two sisters from Leeds who had come for the carnival and stayed on for the fog. The younger one, Tilly, stood directly under the skull with her head tipped back, the way children look at everything they are not allowed to touch. "Who's it for?" she asked. "Whoever's coming back," Veronica said, which was not an answer, and Tilly accepted it because it sounded like one.

Ray had painted it the summer the bank closed, working from a postcard of a festival he'd bought in a Ramsgate charity shop. He gave the skull a cheek of scrollwork like lace on a christening gown and roses for eyebrows, and he never once explained the green. Veronica had stopped asking him to explain things years before he died.

That evening Tilly asked for a brush of her own. She painted a lopsided marigold in the corner, tongue between her teeth, and Veronica did not fix it. By morning the fog had lifted, the sea had come up to the foot of the cliff steps, and the wall still had room for one more flower.
