Cat in a Darth Vader helmet on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a grey tabby cat with wide green eyes and a pink nose, its face framed by a black Darth Vader helmet with a visible mouth grille. The cat fur and eyes are shaded with soft greys and a touch of green, while the helmet uses dense black and grey shading with highlights along its edges. It is centred on the calf against plain skin, with a sock and a grey carpeted floor visible in the background.

The helmet came out of a jumble box marked FARM SALE, wedged between a cracked Pyrex dish and a clock that had stopped at twenty past four. Gran fished it out, turned it over in both hands and said it would do for the cat. Nobody asked the cat. Admiral had been living in the lower barn since before I was born, and he took one look at the black dome and went very still, the way he did at a fox.

We had a rat problem that winter. Two hundred bales were stacked to the rafters in the lower barn, and something had chewed through the corner of the feed store until the oats ran out across the floor like spilt sand. Dad had given up on traps. So Gran padded the inside of the helmet with an old tea towel, tied it under his chin with baler twine, and sent him out each night with his whiskers poking through the vents and his green eyes staring out of the eyeholes like a very small, very cross tyrant.

The rats did not care for the costume. They cared for him, and they stopped coming. By February the grain store was quiet, and Admiral had taken to sitting on the tractor seat in the frost with the helmet pushed back on his head, looking at the yard as if it owed him money.

One morning in March I found the helmet sitting empty on the tractor seat, and Admiral curled in the feed bin beside a split sack of barley, snoring through his nose. Gran says he has earned his rest. I say he has earned his dinner. Either way, the helmet stays on the seat now, and when the snow comes down he climbs up beside it, turns his back on the yard, and breathes slow and deep, as if he has never once been anything but a cat.
