The Starlight Ballroom on Marlow Pier hired a new doorman on the Tuesday, and by Thursday half the town had decided he was a bear in a borrowed coat. Nobody agreed on where he'd come from. He wore a brown fringed coat with a leather bandolier across it, the loops stuffed with pencils for the dance cards, and he greeted people with a growl like a gearbox dragged over gravel. Mrs Pilcher, who ran the tea urn, said he was the first man she'd seen who looked tailored by weather.

You're the one who finally asks him to dance, mostly because your card is empty, your shoes are pinching, and the band is playing a foxtrot slow enough to drown in. He looks at your offered hand the way a man looks at an unfamiliar dish. Then he lifts you as though you were a sack of flour that happens to laugh, and the whole floor turns to watch.

He counts under his breath in a language made of hums and coughs. When the band slides into a waltz, the pencils knock against each other in the bandolier like teeth. By midnight he has danced the cards of everyone in the hall, including Mrs Pilcher, who blushes like a kettle. At closing time he unbuckles one pencil, presses it into your palm, and scratches a date onto your card in letters that look like they were carved into bark.

Next Thursday, the card goes up on the notice board beside the lost-property list and an old photograph of a fishing crew. Somebody has written underneath it in pencil, very neatly, that the doorman is not to be given the foxtrot.
