The bride's father would not have the dark man at the wedding, so the dark man came anyway, in his iron helmet, and sat on the well wall where the blue flowers grew in the trough. Nobody in Thornbeck knew his name. He had walked in along the north road on the morning the banns were read, carrying a sack that clinked and nothing else.

At the feast he said little. When the fiddler struck up, he went down the row of trestles and set one blue flower in each girl's hair. Every flower had a dark seed at its heart, ringed round with small white stones. The girls laughed behind their hands. The bride's father shouted at him to go, and the helmet only turned its two black eyes toward him and waited, the way a dog waits at a gate it knows will open.

The bride's father had not thought of the winter the river froze. His own father had gone out on the ice to fetch a drowning boy and had not come back. Only a dented bucket was pulled from the reeds in spring, and in its rust someone had pressed a flower. The bride's father had told the village the bucket was lost. He had kept it hidden under the stairs for forty years.

The helmet crossed the yard and set the last seed in the old man's buttonhole. In the morning the bride's father went out to the well and found green leaves climbing the rim of the trough, and beside them, one blue flower open in the frost, with a white stone at its heart where the seed had been.
