Cat in a red hood with clouds
Japanese · Colour · Flash
A grey cat with a scowling expression, one amber eye and one pale blue eye, wears a red hood patterned with gold flowers and has a fanged mouth. The cat's ears poke out from the hood, and the head is framed by stylised blue clouds on a pale green-grey background. The bold outlines and flat areas of colour are typical of Japanese style flash.

The fleet had been out three days when the wind backed round to the north and the cat came aboard the Morwen Rose with her hood already up. Nobody saw her step over the rail. Old Tam Pell said she had been sitting on the bollard since dawn, grey as wet slate, one amber eye on the gunwale and the pale one fixed on the cloud bank piling up behind Skerry Head.

Her hood was red, sewn with gold flowers, and tied tight under her chin like a fisherwife's shawl in a squall. Pell's boy wanted to shoo her off. Pell told him to leave the creature be, for a cat that has chosen a boat has chosen its crew, and there is no getting out of that bargain once it is made.
The nets came up heavy that afternoon, then heavier, and the sky went the colour of a bruise. Every hand was on the winch when the cat stood, stretched, and bit clean through the warp holding the trawl. The net sank into the dark. Pell swore at her. She turned her pale eye on him, flicked one ear, and pointed her nose at the bow, where the water had gone flat and oily in a ring of silver. They ran for it, and she sat on the prow with her fangs bared at the weather until the squall tore past to the south and the Morwen Rose rode its wake like a gull.
When they came home the other boats had lost their nets and two of them their masts. Pell's boy asked why the cat had let their catch go. Pell lit his pipe, looked at the grey shape asleep on the coiled rope with one red thread of hood caught on a nail, and said she had counted the drowned men on the other boats and found none of her own.
