Cat made of flowers across a back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A cat curled in a sleeping pose is formed entirely from flower petals across the upper back, with its head at the left shoulder and its tail sweeping to the right. The flowers use bold red, orange, blue and white with dark outlines, and the tail fades into loose splashes of colour. The composition is shown from behind and fills most of the frame against a plain green wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat came up through the peonies the summer the old gardener stopped answering the gate, and nobody in Harrow Lane could say whose it was. Mrs Okafor's boy named it Marigold because it had orange on its belly, though the rest of it was more like a painter's rag: blue of the hydrangeas along its cheek, white of the windflowers across its back, red of the poppies where its legs should have been. It slept on the warm bricks by the potting shed as if it had been poured there.

When the council men came to clear the allotment strip, they found a line of tiger lilies they swore had not been planted, bent in a curl the length of a man. Nobody would step on them. The foreman, a practical sort who had once cut down a plane tree with his own saw, stood with his hat in his hands and told the others to leave the sleeping thing alone until it woke. He said it had the look of something that knew exactly how long it had.

It woke in October, when the first frost whitened the cabbages. The petals along its spine had gone the colour of rust and then of tea, and by morning there was only a tail left, trailing across the path in loose spatters of colour that faded as you watched them, like breath on a window. Ella, who was nine and kept a notebook, wrote down that the cat had gone towards the river. Beside the place where it had lain, a single dark stem stood up out of the soil, and from its tip a bloom the size of a thumbnail was opening, blue and white, as though someone had only just remembered to finish it.
