Floral cat silhouette on upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a cat silhouette with its head and tail curling across the upper back, with a blue-eyed face on the left side. Each part of the body is filled with layered flowers in blue, white, orange and red, with dark outlines separating the petals. Bright colour dominates against the pale skin and a green wall behind.

The rain had been coming off the canal since six, and by eight the flower stalls on Tanner Row were running with colour that had nowhere to go. I was stacking dahlias into buckets when the cat came down the wall, the one with the blue eye that nobody on the row could agree was blue. It sat on my crate as though it had paid for the spot, and then it took a single orange bloom from the bucket in its teeth and walked off with its tail held high.

It came back every morning after that. Dorrie Vane, who sold lilies two stalls down, swore it was stealing from her too, and by the second week we had all started counting our stems at closing time. Nobody ever saw it eat a petal. Mostly it just took one thing, the cheapest or the most bruised, and went off up the cobbles towards the old chapel gate, where the ivy had long since swallowed the railings.
On the ninth morning I followed it. The rain eased to a fine mist as I climbed the steps, and the cat stopped at the foot of a shuttered shopfront with a painted sign too faded to read. Along the wet stone, at intervals as neat as stitches, lay the flowers it had taken: a lily, a rose, two marigolds, a red dahlia still beaded with rain. They led to the door of the shop where Dorrie's husband had once sold bulbs, a man none of us had seen for years. The cat sat down on the doorstep and waited for me to understand.
I went back to the market and told Dorrie. She didn't say anything for a long while. The next morning her buckets were full of lilies again, and so were mine, and the cat was on the wall above them with one red dahlia pinned under its paw, not stolen this time but left for whoever came to collect it.
