Cat on a crescent moon and black panther tattoos

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Several tattoos are shown on bare arms and legs, including a black cat on a crescent moon with yellow, blue and red shading on the forearm, and a black panther on the lower leg. A black and grey profile of a woman with voluminous hair sits on the thigh, and a small dark motif appears on a finger. Bold black outlines and solid fills dominate, with the colour limited to the moon and a few accents, set against a black and white chevron bedding with a mug of coffee at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The night the late goods came round the bend without a driver, Tom Ambrey was on the platform bench with his boots off and a cold pie in his lap. The black cat was already up on the signal post, sitting in the crook of the lamp bracket with its tail curled round its feet, watching the moon come up thin as a paring over the cutting.

Ada Fenwick had kept the level crossing before him, and she had told him the cat came with the line. Her own grandmother had seen a panther walk the embankment in the hard winter, sleek as spilt ink, and the old men said the railway stayed out of trouble while one of the black ones kept watch. Tom had laughed at that until the first winter he slept through a warning bell and woke to find the cat sitting on his chest.

The goods engine came on with its lamps dark and its wheels shrieking over points that should have been set for the siding. Tom stood up, pie forgotten, and the cat dropped from the post, crossed the sleepers in three neat bounds and put one paw on the lever. The signal swung red so hard the glass rang. The brakes bit. The engine stopped with its buffers a hand's width from the platform edge, and in the lamplight its cab was empty.

In the morning there were pawprints in the soot along the rail, and the timetable at Skell Bridge had a new line pencilled under the Thursday service in Ada's careful hand: Stops by request of the cat.
