Tiny coffee cup tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small hand rests on crumpled white sheets, holding a white mug of tea or coffee seen from above. A tiny black outline of a coffee cup with three wisps of steam sits on the inside of the wrist. The linework is thin and even, the ink is solid black with no shading, and the soft, neutral palette of the bedding keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Hold your tongue till I've finished the kettle, because the tale doesn't start until the steam does. Forty years I've watched that crossing at Varnoy, where the river bends and the customs hut leans like a drunk against the bridge. The men in that hut drank nothing but stewed black stuff from a dented urn, and they said it kept the cold out of the bones.

There was a clerk there called Istvan Dorn, a thin man who kept his cup on the windowsill and never drank while it still steamed. He said a cup with steam rising had a secret it hadn't told yet. One March a woman came across with a single suitcase and a letter sealed in red wax. Dorn stamped everything except the letter, which he held up to the lamp. It was only a list of tea leaves and the name of a town on the far side, so he let her pass without a word, because he had once been a boy in that town himself.

Each morning after that, Dorn poured two cups from the urn and set one on the bridge rail, steam curling up into the fog. Nobody collected it. The guards laughed at him, then stopped laughing when the cups went cold in the same place every day for a year, and the frost drew a ring around each one.

The spring the bridge was finally mended, a cup was waiting for him on the sill, still warm, with a slip of paper under the saucer. It said only: The steam is the message. Drink, Istvan. He drank it standing in the rain, and when he looked up, the far bank had someone on it, lifting a cup back.
