Small arrow tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A person sits on a white bed holding a mug of pale tea in one hand, with bare legs crossed in the foreground. A small, simple arrow is tattooed on the inner forearm near the wrist, drawn in thin black linework with no shading. The tattoo is the only point of dark ink in the image, and the soft white bedding and warm skin tones form a calm, muted composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The county sent you out with a tin of white gloss and a brush cut to a point, and the first board you did was at the crossroads below Ebbing, where the lane forks away from the mill. Your father had taught you to hold the brush the way he held a pencil for drawings of ships, loose at the wrist, so the line came out thin and sure. Nobody in Ebbing had thought a girl could do the arrows properly. You did them anyway, one per board, always pointing the way a stranger would need to go.

By the autumn you knew every board from the station to the reservoir. You knew which ones the frost lifted and which the lorries scraped. Mr Halloran at the post office once asked why you bothered with the little ones on the back lanes, where nobody but the milk van ever went. You told him a lane that small still deserved to be told where it went.

The last board was at Fenwick Bottom, a sign for a farm that had changed hands twice since spring. You stood on the verge with the tin at your feet and a cup of tea going cold on the bonnet of the van. A boy on a bicycle slowed, read the board with his lips moving, then waved and pedalled on towards the moor. You watched the thin black point of the arrow until he was gone, and then you drank your tea.
