Cat on a crescent moon flash design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A seated cat in solid black outline is drawn on a crescent moon, with a triangle containing a circle and lines on its chest and a single eye on its forehead. The crescent is filled with line-drawn flowers, dots and scroll-like curls. The design is shown in black on a cream background, placed on a dark wooden surface.

Sit down, all of you, and mind the lamp, because the cat won't tell this story twice and I'll not have you missing the part with the moon. Ask anyone in Pellow Cove about Mab Tregenza's grey cat and they'll tell you it had three eyes, which is nonsense, since a cat is born with two. The third sat on its brow like a bead of ink, and Mab swore it watched the herring boats go out before any man on the quay had lit his pipe.

The winter the harbour iced at its edges, the moon hung low over the breakwater, thin as a paring knife. Mab's husband, Joss, had gone out in the Brightwater and not come back past the bar. The cat sat on the harbour steps every night facing the water, as if counting. On the seventh night it climbed onto the crescent of the iron lamp-post, which nobody thought could bear a cat's weight, and curled its tail round the post like a scroll.
Mab went up after it with a shawl and a tin of pilchards. She found the cat sitting on the lamp as neat as a sphinx, a triangle of light on its chest where the lantern caught the old brass mark. 'You've had your sulk,' she said. The cat turned its three eyes to the sea, then to her, and did not blink, and she understood she was being asked to walk.
Joss came in on the spring tide eleven days later, with the Brightwater's mast snapped and a rattling cough, and walked up the steps on his own two feet. Mab kept a slate carved with the cat on the mantel ever after, and every autumn she set a saucer of milk beneath the crescent. The moon was only ever a cat's bed, she said, and the cat was only ever waiting for the tide to bring the boats home.
