Cat outline on the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a cat in profile, shown stretching with its head raised and its tail curling upwards. The linework is thin and even with small whisker marks on the face, and the design is left unshaded. The tattoo sits on the upper back below the nape, with the subject's hair gathered up and a green top visible on a blurred outdoor background.

The cat had already claimed the lamp room when the relief boat came in, so the islanders decided I would be staying on whether I liked it or not. Her name was Tuesday, though nobody could say who had given it to her, and she moved through Skerrow the way a bad-tempered duchess moves through a church fete, stopping only to be admired.

Every morning she climbed to the top of the wall above the slipway and performed the same ritual. She stretched until her spine was a long grey bow, lifted her chin towards the mainland, and let her tail rise into a curl that looked, to my eye, like a question mark someone had forgotten to finish. Old Mr Ferrier said she was only limbering up for the mackerel. I thought otherwise.
In October the post stopped. The gulls had the sea to themselves and the Thursday ferry went quiet for a month. I spent those evenings writing letters I didn't post and reading them aloud to Tuesday, who listened with her ears flat and her whiskers twitching at every sentence that sounded like an apology.
The ferry came back on a grey Thursday with a single envelope in the mailbag, addressed to me in a hand I had not seen in eleven years. I read it on the wall with the cat pressed against my hip. When I looked up, Tuesday had gone very still, tail curled high, staring at the boat as if she had been waiting for it too. I sat with the letter a while longer, then I got up and went down to meet the boat.
