Cat portrait tattoo on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A tabby cat with eyes closed and tongue out is held against a forearm covered in tattoos. The tattoo shows a cat's face in a grey, shaded outline with a lettered banner beneath it, plus a red shape and darker shaded designs elsewhere on the arm. The green shirt and blurred background keep the focus on the arm and the cat.

Late August, and the Bramley windfalls had started to ferment in the long grass of Hollis Orchard. Tilda sat on the flint wall above them with her eyes shut, looking like a cat who had never once thought about apples. Only her ears moved, turning towards the creak of the picking ladder at the far end of the rows, where old Ned Crouch was working the high branches with a canvas bag slung across his chest.

Ned had told her twice that the windfalls were wasps' business and not hers. Tilda had decided, privately, that the wasps could mind their own affairs. She dropped from the wall in one soft movement, nosed a red apple the size of her head towards the gap in the hedge, and rolled it along the path with both paws, stopping every few yards to lick her lips at nothing in particular.
It was the rolling that gave her away. The apple reached the foot of the ladder just as Ned came down the rungs. He stopped, looked at the apple, then at her, and let out a laugh that scattered two blackbirds from the top of the hedge.
"Shameless," he said. He crouched down, his knees cracking like kindling, and set the apple on the wall beside her. He did not take it back. Instead he fetched a saucer from the potting shed, filled it with milk from the flask in his bag, and put it on the step of the cider house.
Tilda drank the milk first. Then she sat in the sun, tongue out, and pretended she had planned the whole thing.
