Tabby cat held by tattooed forearms
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A person in a blue t-shirt cradles a tabby cat belly up against a black background, with the cat's mouth open and its paws raised. Both arms are heavily tattooed from the upper arm to the forearm, with dark linework and shading on the left arm and areas of red, orange and green ink on the right. The crop cuts off the person's face and the image is lit evenly, with a set of keys hanging from the belt at the lower edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The snow shut the Hollin Gap road on the third day, and the drovers and the carter and the widow with her goose all crowded into the low room of the Stag and Lantern. The innkeeper's tabby, Pell, had been carried to the fire, to the cellar and back again by everyone who thought they could hold her, and she had scratched every one of them. When the carter finally caught her, he hooked her up against his chest with his inked forearms, rowan red and ivy green, and turned her belly up as if she were a sack of meal. She opened her mouth and yowled the whole length of the room.

The widow laughed until she had to sit down. The carter did not laugh. He had heard the rattle of keys on the innkeeper's belt when the cat yowled, and he had heard the scrabble under the cellar door before anyone else. Pell twisted in his grip, pawed at his sleeve, and fixed her eyes on the flagstones by the hearth. The carter knelt, set her down, and let her go.
She went straight to the loose stone, and under it the innkeeper's lost purse was waiting, the one that had gone missing at midsummer and been blamed on the drovers. Rats had been living in the gap beneath it, and the purse had been half chewed. The room went quiet.
By morning the snow had stopped. Pell slept on the carter's coat by the fire, belly up, her paws in the air, and whenever the innkeeper moved about with his keys on his belt, she only lifted one ear and let him pass.
