Cartoon black cat tattoo beside a kitten

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A flat, cartoon-style black cat with large round eyes and pointed ears is tattooed on an arm, with its body filling most of the tattoo. The tattoo uses solid fills with muted grey-purple ink, plus small yellow and pink accents on the eyes and face. A grey and white kitten lies on its back beside the arm on white sheets, with its paws raised and eyes wide open.

Hold the tiller steady, Dot, and stop fussing over that bag. It's only a kitten, and it's been sick in it twice already. Nobody sensible takes a kitten on a boat in March, but the Ada Mary has never been run by sensible people, and that's why I'm still breathing.

The black cat came aboard at Braunston the winter the cut froze over. It had no name, so the lock-keeper's girl called it Jiji after a book she was reading, and the name stuck the way wet coats stick to a hook. It sat on the cabin roof with its ears pinned back against the wind and watched the water like a clerk watching a ledger.

The night we lost the bow rope at Stoke Bruerne, the whole boat swung sideways in the dark and the lamp guttered out. I was ready to swear the Ada Mary was done for. Jiji hopped down onto the gunwale, eyes shining yellow as two lanterns, and walked the plank to the towpath. Then it sat there, tail curled round its paws, until the lock-keeper came with a torch and a spare rope. Some say cats don't guide anyone. I say that one did.

Dot's kitten is grey and white and too daft to be frightened of anything. Last week it climbed the mast, fell off the roof, and came up purring with a feather stuck to its nose. Jiji sat by the stove and washed its own ears, slow and deliberate, like it was teaching manners by example. So when you ask me why I keep a cat that won't be owned, that's your answer. You take on the one that knows the way home, and you let the little one learn it from the back of the boat.
