Cat with paw print trail on lower back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo shows a cat walking with its long tail curling upwards, beside a trail of three paw prints. The linework is smooth and even, with solid black fills on the paw pads and the tail. The ink is black only, set against warm skin, and the design sits centrally on the lower back.

The cat came in the week we lit the new oven, and it never once asked whether it could. I found it at four in the morning, sitting on the proving shelf as if it had paid rent. White at the chest, tabby everywhere else, with a thin collar and a tag worn smooth enough that I could only make out a single J. I shooed it off the shelf. It sat on the flour bin instead and watched me weigh out the salt.

By the second week I had learned its routine. It walked the length of the bench with its tail held up like a question mark, and wherever it stepped the white dust took the print of a pad, neat as a stamp. I swept the floor every morning before the first loaves came out, and every morning the cat came back before I had finished, stepping straight through my work to the back door.
On the Thursday I opened the door for it. It stopped on the step, looked at the grey street, then at me, and I could have sworn it rolled its eyes. Then it went, tail rising over the kerb, and the last print it left was a single pad on the cold stone. I stood there with a warm bun in my hand. I put the bun on the step anyway, and in the morning it was gone, and so were the prints, and the flour on the bench was whole again.
