The cat arrived at the allotment gate on the third morning of the frost, sitting so neatly on the top bar that Mrs Okonedo-Price assumed someone had left it there as a joke. She was sixty-eight and had grown leeks on plot fourteen since the council first split the field in 1979, and she did not hold with animals that sat on her gate looking pleased with themselves.

Nobody claimed it. Dennis from plot nine said it was a Siamese gone feral, and the lad who ran the tea hut said it had been fed a sausage roll by a man in a van. It walked the rows after her with its tail curled round its feet like a question mark, stopping wherever she stopped, watching the spade with its ears pinned forward as if it had opinions about soil.

By February she had given up on shooing it. She left a saucer of milk by the water butt and a bit of fish under the upturned bucket, and in return it kept the mice off her seed potatoes and never once stepped on a bed. In March she found it asleep in the empty wheelbarrow with its whiskers twitching at nothing.

When the allotment society held its spring show, the judges gave her a rosette for the parsnips. She came home to find the cat on her step, and beside it a paper bag with a sausage roll inside. She sat down next to it, unwrapped the bag, and broke the pastry in two.
