The snow had been falling since Tuesday, and by Thursday the road over Harrow Fell was buried under a white sheet. It was black all over and sat upright with its tail curled around its feet, watching me as if I owed it rent. Beside it, pressed into the grey dust on the flagstones, were prints. They were small, the size of a thumbnail, and they came in pairs from the back door, up the first step, and onward, each set a little higher than the last, until they reached the landing and stopped outside the door to room four.

Mrs Eskdale had told me that room had been shut since her husband's brother died in it, the winter the beck froze solid. I took the torch from my car and went up. The prints crossed the boards and vanished at the sill, as though whoever made them had simply stepped through. The cat padded up behind me, sat squarely on the threshold, and would not be moved.

In the morning the snow had stopped and the plough was grinding up the valley. I found Mrs Eskdale in the kitchen and told her I had slept well, and that the cat had kept me company. She set down her cup and looked at me for a long time. "We never had a cat," she said. Outside, a fresh line of small prints ran from the back door toward the road, and only one set of them went out.
