Black cat silhouette on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a seated cat, turned to look back over its shoulder, with a long tail curling round at the base. The cat has pointed ears with small spiked details and two simple eye shapes cut into the black fill. The shape is filled with solid black ink with no shading or grey tones, set against plain skin on the upper back with a small mole visible beside the body.

Nine weeks out of Hull, bound for Valparaíso, we took a bad night off the Horn. The main topsail split, two men went aloft, and the mate reckoned we'd lose the mast before dawn. I was at the wheel when the cat came up the companion steps and walked the length of the weather deck to sit on the rail by the binnacle. Its ears lay flat. Each time a sea broke over the bow it turned to look at the sea, then at me, as though I were the one running late.
At four bells the wind backed and the swell eased. The cat didn't come down. When the watch changed, Cook found me staring at the empty rail and said it had gone up the fore shrouds like it had business there. He didn't say what business. I didn't ask.
We raised Valparaíso eleven weeks later. The cat went down the gangplank without a backward glance, which I took as an insult, until it stopped at the foot of the quay and turned its head to look up at the ship, the way you check a door you locked behind you.
