Celtic cross, wings and roses design

Realism · Mixed · Flash

A digitally rendered tattoo design showing a Celtic knot cross at the top, with two shaded roses on a stem and feathered wings forming an outline around them. The wings and petals use soft airbrush-style shading and fine feather detail, while the cross has crisp interlaced linework. Mostly greyscale, with small red drops along the stem and wing tips adding the only colour.

The rain had been coming off the Kingsgate stall roof all morning, and you had stopped counting how many times Mrs Odell came back to the iron crate for another bunch of wet carnations. Your hands were cold enough that the knotted cross you were polishing kept slipping. It was her husband's, she said, a pawnshop piece from Liverpool with interlaced arms like a drain grate, and she wanted it sold before the lease ran out on Friday.

Two black roses sat in a jam jar beside the till, the ones nobody bought because they looked like bruises. You had taken them from a dead man's allotment in Walsall for a fiver and a debt you never meant to repay, and the thorns had pricked you twice on the walk back. Something about them made the stall feel like a chapel. When the wind lifted the tarpaulin, the wing-shaped shadows it threw across the cobbles moved like something trying to take off.

At half five the woman came back without the carnations. She slid a folded note under the jar and said the cross was no longer for sale, that her husband had asked for it to be buried with a rose on each arm. You read the note twice. The ink had run in the rain, but the last line held: keep the roses, they were his idea.

You left the jar on the till. Water dripped from the awning and ran pink where the cheap dye had bled from a petal, and for a moment it looked like the drops that gather at the tips of feathers before they fall. You pulled the tarpaulin down and went home with the cold sticking to your collar.
