Red roses with black tribal design
Mixed · Flash
A digital design of two red roses, one above the other, set within black tribal-style spikes and curling scrolls. The black linework is bold and solid, with grey shading on the petals and background shapes. The composition is a tall, vertical arrangement against a plain white background.

You have the tin of black enamel open on the bench at Hallam's garage when the Harker boy wheels his motorbike in with the tank scorched down one side. Nobody in Little Wenham has ever seen a rider come off the Ashby road in one piece and then ask for paint rather than a doctor, but that is what he does, and you are the only one in town who can match the red.

You mix it the way your father taught you, a drop of carmine into the lead-white until it stops looking like blood and starts looking like the inside of a plum. He wants scrolls painted across the tank, black spikes climbing up from the petrol cap like thorns pushing through a hedge. You work with a fine sable brush while a dance tune drifts down from the Crown, and you do not ask why he wants roses on a machine that nearly killed him.
Three weeks later the bike is running again, and he comes back with a girl's handkerchief knotted round the handlebars. She is the one who chose the second rose. You had painted a single bloom above the spikes, and she stood at your bench and tapped the bare space below it with a gloved finger. 'Another one,' she said, 'so he has something to look at when he's going too fast.' You painted it a little lower and a little darker, and the grey shadows you added made it look as though it had already begun to close.
They rode out past the church that evening, and you watched until the taillight was a red dot on the Ashby road. Then you wiped the brush on your overall and went back to the bench, where the tin still stood open with its black gone thick at the edge. Nobody had asked you to finish the scrolls, so you did them anyway, one curl after another, until the whole tank was hemmed in and there was nowhere left for anything to fall.
