Digital flash design of red roses woven through black and grey tribal swirls and spikes, drawn for a sleeve-length tattoo.

Red roses with black and grey tribal swirls

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A tall vertical tattoo design showing three red roses at different sizes, stacked along a central stem and set among sweeping black and grey tribal-style swirls, spikes and fin-like shapes. The linework is bold with soft grey shading that gives the blades and scrolls a metallic, dimensional look. Red is the only colour, used on the rose petals, against a plain white background.

The band at the Palais has played the same waltz four times since the lights dimmed, and the floor is still thick with couples who have stopped pretending they are not waiting for you to do something. You cross to the far rail, where the iron balusters curl up like the scrollwork on the bandstand, black and barbed, and you lean on them until the drummer nods at you across the room.

Mrs Ardley's daughter has been dancing with the same sailor since eight. He keeps his cap tucked under one arm and turns her with the care of a man carrying crockery up a steep stair. Nobody tells you what he is to her. You learned not to ask in the week the boats came in, when the lamps on the harbour wall burned all night and someone's brother did not come back up the slipway.

Here is the thing about the roses. Mr Pell, who runs the cloakroom, sells them from a bucket by the door, three for a shilling, and every girl who buys one comes away with a different size. The big red one goes to whoever she wants to keep. The middle one goes to whoever she wants to forgive. The smallest she pins inside her glove and never mentions.

When the band finally stops, you walk the length of the floor with your hands in your coat. The sailor is waiting by the door with his cap crushed in his fist. You hold out the bucket. He takes the smallest rose, the girl laughs at something he has not said, and you go home with the shilling still in your pocket and the last tune stuck in your head.
