Pentagram within a looping knotwork circle
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a five-pointed star, with its points crossing a central pentagon, set inside a circular ring of interlocking looped bands. Thick solid black strokes contrast with small thorn-like marks along the star's arms. The design is in black on white with a symmetrical, centred composition.

Dear Nell,

The rope walk has gone quiet since Mr Ashby took to his bed, so I have been left to finish the mooring lines for the Gannet alone. You will laugh, but I have started to trust the old man's habit of marking every hawser with a star before it leaves the shed. He calls it a knot-bind. Five points drawn in tar, then the strands looped round them in a ring until the whole thing sits like a coin on the tallow. I asked him once what it was for. He said the sea likes a thing it can count.
Yesterday the Gannet came back with a line frayed clean through at the stern. The mate was furious until he saw the mark on the splice, still whole, the thorn-ticks along each arm where the twist had bitten and held. Ashby would have been pleased. He never trusted a knot that didn't leave a mark on the rope.
I have sat up tonight trying to draw the star without lifting the pen, the way he taught me, and I keep arriving at the same point where the line crosses itself. Five times round and you are back where you began, only heavier. I think that is what he meant about the ring. It is not a circle at all but a promise to come home by the same road.
Tomorrow I will take the Gannet's new hawser down to the quay myself. If Ashby's door is open when I pass, I will tell him the star held. Write back soon, and tell Mother not to worry about the damp.
Your loving brother, Tom
