Celtic interlace knot on skin

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical Celtic-style knot made of interlaced loops and a central diamond lattice sits on a smooth area of skin. The linework is dark and bold, with grey shading on the ribbon sections that gives the knot depth. The plain, pale background keeps the design as the single focus of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The nets came up from the Mallow Deep every morning that spring with the same knot tied through their floats, and nobody in Corran Haven would say who was tying them. Old Dorrie Pell swore it was the sea's own work, the way water folds back on itself over the reef. Her son Tam said it was the Hennessy girl, who sat on the harbour wall mending with a bone needle and never looked up when the boats came in.

So Maud Hennessy waited one dawn with a lantern in the lee of the salt shed, and at first light she saw the knot made true. A loop went under, a loop came over, and the cord ran back on itself into a diamond so tight it seemed to hold the wind. Four strands, then six, then the whole net hung in a lattice that the gulls would not land on. Maud had been watching for a hand, and there was none, only the cord pulling itself into pattern like a thought finishing.

She picked up the end and followed it. It led her past the crab pots, past the drowned bell, out along the slick stones where the tide had gone to sleep. At the far edge the cord ran back under the water and came up again as the first loop she had ever tied, the clumsy one her mother had helped her with at six years old.

When the boats came in that evening every net was whole, and Maud went down to the wall with her needle and said nothing at all.
