I have been following the square line cut into the old gatepost at the wood's edge, the one the carpenter Hollis carved before he went off to the war and never came back to finish.

It is not a hard thing to trace if you use a length of waxed twine and keep your thumb on the crossings. You go out along one arm, turn at the square corner, slip under the second loop and turn again. I did it nine times on Tuesday with the lamp guttering on the stile. Each time I thought I had reached the start, and each time the twine simply carried on, passing over where I had been and under where I had not, as though the wood were politer than the rest of us and kept making room.

Mrs Peck says the knot is for keeping things in, and Father says it is for nothing at all, only a joiner showing off. I think it is the other way about. Hollis wanted a thing that could not come undone, so he made the joins turn back on themselves until there was no loose end to pull.
