The mortar had been crumbling for a week before Tomas Reddish agreed to let me near the north tower, and by then the rain had washed half the lichen off the lintel. I was sixteen, I had a bucket of lime and a borrowed trowel, and I was supposed to be pointing stones, not staring at the carving above the doorway. Nobody had mentioned the carving. It was a knot, worn nearly flat, its bands as wide as my thumb and cut so deep that the shadows still sat in them at noon.

Tomas said the masons who built Hollin Keep had carved one knot into every gate they hung, and that it was meant to show a road that never ends. I didn't believe him. I believed him more once I tried to trace it. I laid a length of chalk string along the first band and followed it over, under, over again, past the place where I was sure I'd lost it, until the string stopped exactly where it had started and I had to hold my breath to be certain.
That evening I went back with a notebook and drew the whole thing from memory, then checked it against the stone. My drawing had one mistake. I had left a gap where two bands crossed, and the stone had no gap anywhere. Every crossing was closed, every band joined to the next, and the path went round the shape twice before it came home.
I pointed the lintel the next morning, slowly, the way Tomas had shown me, and when I finished I ran my thumb along the carved edge. The stone was warm from the sun. The chalk line lay on the step where I'd dropped it, already fading under the rain, and I found that I did not mind it going.
