Celtic knot dragon design
Colour · Flash
A symmetrical dragon drawn in Celtic interlace, with two large knotted wings in shades of blue spreading from a green body and head at the centre. The linework is continuous and looping, with spirals and pointed tips along the wings and tail. The image is a flat colour drawing on a plain white background, with blue and green inks and no shading.

The ewes have wandered into the lower field again, and you go after them with a lantern before the light is gone. Frost lies on the wall stones like salt. Halfway up the rise you find the dragon instead, coiled in the bracken with its green length looped three times round a dead ash, its wings folded flat and laced with blue like the frozen ruts of a lane.

It doesn't rear or hiss. Its eye is a single bead of light, and it watches you the way your grandfather watched the sky before a hard frost. The ewes are behind it, pressed together in the lee of its tail, warm as bread. You think they must have crept there for the heat, and that the dragon has let them stay. You set the lantern down. Its wings lift a little, the interlace shifts, and you see that the lines never cross where you expected. Every loop runs on into the next, one thread from wingtip to tail.
You follow the thread with a gloved finger, the way your mother taught you to find the end of a tangled fleece. It takes a long time. The cold gets into your knuckles and you stop feeling the wool. At the spiral near the tail the knot gives, the ash bark splits along the grain, and the dragon uncoils with a sound like a gate swinging open.
By morning the snow has come down soft over the valley. The ewes are safe in the byre. In the top field there is a long green mark pressed into the white, and beside the gatepost lie three blue feathers of frost that nobody on the farm will admit to having seen.
