Old Maud kept her goats on the hill below Corrin Keep, where the walls had fallen in the year the lord sailed off and never came home. Nobody else would graze there. Every spring she climbed the broken stair to the chapel with a sack of seed gathered from the lane hedges, and she scattered it into the cracks between the flagstones, the way her mother had taught her to feed hens.

The village said the place was cursed and her son said she was daft. Then in June the cracks burst with flowers, five pale petals to each bloom and a dark dotted eye at the centre, and bees came up from three valleys away. Maud did not explain why she had set them so, only that they seemed to know where they wanted to be. By midsummer the chapel floor was a heart of blossom, its point dropping toward the broken door and its two lobes pressed against the old east wall.
That autumn the lord's daughter came back, grey at the temples, with a lawyer's papers in a leather case and a speech ready about rights of sale. She stood in the doorway and forgot every word of it. Maud poured her a cup of goat's milk and pointed at the floor without saying anything at all.
The daughter read the deeds that night by a candle stub and found the castle was hers only if she could keep it standing. She signed it over to the village instead. Each June the bees still work the heart from its point up to its two lobes, and nobody in Corrin has ever pulled a single stem.
