Celtic knot shamrock design

Geometric · Colour · Flash

A symmetrical four-leaf clover built from interlaced Celtic knotwork in several shades of green, with small dots scattered between the leaves. The woven loops are drawn with clean, even outlines and a soft wash of shading that gives the strands depth. The design sits centred on a plain white background with no skin or body visible.

Now sit close, for the fire's low and I'll not raise my voice for the back benches. My grandmother's cousin Nessa kept the lamp at the Blackwater dance hall, the one with the sprung floor that bounced like a drum skin. Every Saturday she'd sweep the boards herself, and every Saturday she'd find a single clover leaf pressed flat in the corner by the piano, four leaves knotted together, green as a bottle. Nobody brought them in. The doors were barred.

She took to counting the dots that the clover left on the boards, little green specks in a loose ring around the leaves, the way a dancer's feet leave chalk. One night she followed them out through the back door and down to the river, where they ran in a circle round the old hawthorn. Under it sat a fiddler with his bow across his knees, weaving loops of wet grass into a knot that never ended. He looked up and said, you've come to finish the dance, Nessa, and the stars went round above him like dancers on a ring.

She told him the hall needed its floor and its lamps. He only nodded at the knot and said a knot is a promise that goes in and never comes out, and she could walk back whenever she liked, so long as she did not step on the dots. She walked back. The dots were still there in the morning, and the floor never sang so sweetly again. Mind your feet on the boards when you go home tonight.
