Simple line drawing of a flower with looped stem
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a single flower drawn in thick black outline on a plain white background. Six rounded petals surround a small open circle at the centre, and a long stem runs down from the flower and curls into a loose loop at the base. The linework is uniform and bold, with no shading or fill, so the drawing reads as a simple design sketch.

Nell found the drawing pinned beneath a jar of sea glass on the counter of Halloran's chandlery, drawn in thick black pen on the back of a ferry timetable. Six loops for petals, a small open ring at the centre, and a stem that ran off the bottom edge and curled back on itself before it gave up. It was the fourth one that month. Her father had never drawn anything else in his life, and he had never once explained them.

She had assumed for a while that they were his way of saying something he could not say across the counter. Tomas Halloran rarely said much at all, least of all about the widow on Chapel Row who still bought two loaves on Saturdays. The drawings came on Tuesdays, always left before the kettle was on. Some had the stem looping twice, some had the petals squashed on one side as though the pen had been pressed too hard. She kept them all in a biscuit tin under the till.
On the first cold Sunday of November she followed the stem. She walked it the way it had been drawn, down the slipway, past the lifeboat shed, along the wall where the gulls fought over chips, and found it ended at a rusted locker with a padlock that had been oiled that week. Inside lay a hatbox of newspaper cuttings, a single brass key, and forty-one drawings the same as the ones in her tin, each dated on the back in her father's square capitals.
She sat on the cold concrete for a long time. Then she took a pen from her coat, drew one more flower beside the others, and left the centre of it blank for him to fill.
