The fog had swallowed the harbour wall by the time Mairead Doyle counted the lamps along the breakwater and found the third one dark. Her father's boots were still on the step where he had left them that morning, stiff with brine, and his lantern hung on its hook with the glass unbroken. She took the tin of paraffin and the matches from the nail and went out along the wet stones.

Halfway out, the stones began to glow. Green light crept up from the cracks where weed grew thick, leaves of it no bigger than a thumbnail, three to a stalk, joined by a thread of something that might have been vine. Among them small hard sparks winked, like stars that had dropped into the sea and forgotten to go out. She knelt and held her palm above the glow. It gave no warmth at all, only the feeling of being counted.

At the lamp housing the wick had been chewed through by something she would not name. She trimmed what was left, poured the paraffin, and struck the match on her boot. The flame caught, and out past the mouth of the bay a single answering light swung round. It was the Marigold, the packet her father had sailed on since before dawn, the one the whole quay swore would not make harbour before the weather turned.

She was soaked to the bone when she came back, but the green leaves had followed her in. They lay along the path behind her, fading one by one as she reached the step. At first light the Marigold nosed up to the quay, and her father came down the gangway with salt in his beard and a sprig of three green leaves tucked behind his ear, as if he had been given it by someone who knew the way home.
